A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY - Alfred Abraham

Kethailes

Kethailes was built in 1903 as a 'Gentleman's Steam Yacht' with a crew of more than 50. Her owner was William Johnston, founder of the Johnston Line of Liverpool (later part of Furness Withy), which primarily traded with Atlantic coast and Gulf coast USA ports and into the Black Sea. Kethailes was named by owner William Johnston for his four daughters: Kathleen, ETHel, AILeen, EStele (youngest)

On 24 September 1914 she was voluntarily handed over, with later financial compensation, to the Royal Navy for use as an Armed Naval Auxiliary (also known as an Admiralty Armed Yacht) in the Yacht Patrol and renamed HM Yacht Kethailes. Initially she patrolled in the North Sea, then transferred to the Irish Sea.

On 11 October 1917 she was darkened whilst conducting a local patrol, and was sunk after she was in collision with the Bibby Line steamer Leicestershire at 22.55 about eleven miles to the north-east of the Blackwater Light Vessel. She sank rapidly after the collision, with the loss of seventeen men, eleven survivors, the majority being picked up by the patrol vessel P-44.

Only six bodies came ashore on the other side of the Irish Sea and were buried (only one identified) at Llwyngwril (St. Celynin) Churchyard, and one identified body at Llanaber (St. Mary) Churchyard, both near Barmouth in Merionethshire, mid-Wales. Cause of death in all instances was given as drowning.

17th CENTURY ABRAHAM's

I have managed to trace back beyond the 16th Century starting with ISAAC ABRAHAM & MARY STAMP. Information is very sketchy online mainly due to the bad condition of the Parish Records.

ISAAC & MARY married 25 May 1696 in Eling, Hampshire. I have only found one child - ISAAC above.

Then I go back to yet another ISAAC & MARY! Unfortunately Mary's surname is unknown, they married abt 1670 & had one other child besides ISAAC - JUDITH born c1674 in Alverstoke.

I always surmised that the Abraham's originated in the South of England. However new online records seem to show that ISAAC's parents were RICHARD ABRAHAM & MARGARET JAYE.

They married in Maiden Newton, Dorset 22 Aug 1632 Margaret's birthplace. However RICHARD hails from North Meols, Lancashire! He was born abt 1617 In North Meols.

The original Parish Church burnt down in the early 1700's & was replaced with St Cutherbert's.

RICHARD & MARGARET had another child besides ISAAC a son called JOHN birth date unknown.

The furthest generation I can go back to are the parents of RICHARD - JOHN ABRAHAM & ELIZABETH JANE HOWARD

They had 7 children inc RICHARD:

Lawrence, Elizabeth, Alice, William, Robert & Thomas

A FAMOUS ABRAHAM!

EDWARD PENLEY ABRAHAM

Edward was born at 47 South View Road, Shirley, Southampton. His parents were Maria Agnes Abraham, née Hearne and Albert Penley Abraham, a customs and excise officer. From 1924 Abraham attended King Edward VI School, Southampton, before achieving a First in Chemistry at The Queen's College, Oxford.

Edward completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Sir Robert Robinson, during which he was the first to crystallise lysozyme, an enzyme discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming and shown to have antibacterial properties, and was later the first enzyme to have its structure solved using X-ray crystallography, by Lord David Philips. He then won a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship and spent a year in Stockholm at the Biokemiska Institute.

He then moved back to Oxford and became part of a research team led by Sir Howard Florey at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, responsible for the development of penicillin and its medical applications. Sir Edward was specifically involved in the purification process and determination of its chemical structure. In 1940 Edward discovered penicillinase as the cause of bacterial resistance to antibiotics such as penicillin.

In 1938 he met Asbjörg Harung from Norway whom he married in Bergen the following year: she remained in Norway, trapped by the German invasion, before escaping to Sweden in 1942 when she was reunited with her husband. They had a son Michael Erling Penley Abraham, born in Oxford in July 1943

In 1964 he became Professor of Chemical Pathology and remained a Fellow of Lincoln until his retirement in 1980.

Edward Abraham died in May 1999, in Oxford, following a stroke. He was survived by his wife, Asbjörg.

Sir Edward and Lady Abraham lived at Badgers Wood, Bedwells Heath, Boars Hill, where part of the land, Abraham Wood is now managed by the Oxford Preservation Trust

St Cuthbert's North Meols

Four recent Oxford buildings received funds from Abraham's trusts:

•the EP Abraham research building (completed in 2001, on South Parks Road)

•Lincoln College's EPA Science Centre (an accommodation and conferencing complex, including Lady Abraham House, completed in 2005, on Museum Road)

•Linacre College's Edward & Asbjörg Abraham Building (completed in 1995)

•The Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute, completed in 2011, is also largely funded by proceeds from Abrahams patents
